Aussie flick The Sapphires gets the cartoon treatment

2012 musical drama “The Sapphires” is set to be adapted as a 26-part animated series.

Goalpost Pictures and Sticky Pictures, supported by ABC and Screen NSW, are in the final stages of development of the series, which will be targeted at children and families.

Titled “The Sapphires”, the show will follow four Aboriginal girls – Gail, Cynthia, Julie and Kay – through musical misadventures in a fictional Australian town.

Directed by Wayne Blair, the 2012 film was based on Tony Briggs’ musical stage play. The film took home 12 AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Awards and produced a soundtrack that went double platinum.
