Battlestar Galactica is back!

Those frakkin toasters!

SyFy have announced a second “Battlestar Galactica” spin-off, “Battlestar Galactica : Blood and Chrome”!

Excuse me while I jump, scream, and yell ‘Frak Yeah!’

Unlike prequel series “Caprica”, which many would argue is more soap opera than space adventure, “Blood and Chrome” will be set on the battlefields – the first Cylon War.

The prequel takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet, the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.

“The ‘Galactica’ universe as re-imagined by Ron Moore and David Eick is rich with possibilities and backstory,” said Mark Stern. “We jumped at the chance to revisit the William Adama character and explore this exciting chapter in the BSG narrative which falls between the events of the original series and the prequel, ‘Caprica,’ currently airing on Syfy.”

“While maintaining the themes of politics, social propaganda, and the timeless question: what does it mean to be human? – ‘Blood & Chrome’ will also return us to the authentic, relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ early seasons,” said David Eick.

Colour me excited!

“Galactica” is undoubtedly one of the finest hours on Television. The writing is impeccable, the performances are sometimes gob-smackingly good, and it’s a requirement that everyone that directs an episode of the show (including my pal Rod Hardy) use panache in doing so. They wanted this show to stand-out from the crowd (not to be lost in the “Stargate” worm hole) and it most certainly does. George Lucas could learn a thing or two from Ronald Moore and his crew here, I tell ya.

Eric Stoltz warned me that ”Caprica” would be a very different show to ”Battlestar Galactica” – despite being set in the same world,er, literally – and he was right, it’s apples and oranges. But like the fruit, both are tasty.

I loved Ron Moore’s hip spin on Glenn Larson’s classic science-fiction TV series (never bothered me that Starbuck was a female, either), and like every other fan of the groundbreaking series, wasn’t quite prepared to say goodbye to ”Battlestar” when it concluded last year (but what a finale it was! Wow!), but I didn’t shed a tear. Not one. And why isn’t my cheek wet? Because “Caprica” was coming – and by all accounts, it was to be just as fine an hour.

Set 50 years prior to the events in ”Battlestar Galactica”, ”Caprica” essentially tells the story of the first Cylon – and the man that made it so.

I guess you’d say, “Caprica” is more of a straight-up family drama than a science-fiction actioner like “Galactica”. There’s not a space-fight in sight, yet it still has its elements of sci-fi – and how could it not? It’s set in the future, features robots, and has a Frankensteinien lead character. Because it isn’t as fast-paced or as action-centric as Galactica was, it’s not filmed in ’shaky-cam’. Honestly, I miss the ’shaky cam’ but understand that this show doesn’t call for it.

Sounds like ‘shaky cam’ may be back with this new series ay!?
