Bessie swings onto HBO May 16

Whether you’re a Queen Latifah fan, a Bessie Smith fan, a blues fan or just someone who enjoys a feel-good real-life rags-to-riches drama, you’ll be interested to know that HBO will premiere its original film “Bessie” on May 16.

The film stars Latifah as legendary blues singer Bessie Smith in the biopic about Smith’s transformation from a struggling young singer into one of the most successful recording artists of the 1920s.

Michael Kenneth Williams co-stars as Bessie’s husband Jack Gee, Khandi Alexander plays Bessie’s older sister Viola and Tory Kittles is Bessie’s older brother Clarence.

Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, Oliver Platt, Bryan Greenberg, Charles S. Dutton and Mo’Nique also star. Dee Rees directed.
