Donald P.Borchers’ remake of “Children of the Corn” – going straight to the box – is gearing up for a September start in (of course) Iowa.
A casting call was faxed around to various agencies this week targeted at their most “extreme” and “off-beat” looking actors.
Here’s a look at some of the ‘advertised’ roles :
ISAAC
AGE: 9 YEARS OLD. The leader of the Children of the Corn, this youngster is a smug, self-possessed, lethally self-righteous “little minister,” maddened by power at a tender age. The so-called “prophet” who dictates the law in his secret community of religiously fanatical children, he bases his “theology” on bloody principles of sacrifice and sexuality. Proclaiming all adults “evil,” Isaac allows his appointed “army” of youths to have their pick of the sect’s females — right up until the time that they become adults. Then, they, too, must be sacrificed to appease He Who Walks Behind the Rows, the quite possibly demonic entity who inhabits the cornfields that surround their community. When Vicky and Burt invade their sanctified, blood-soaked territory, Isaac orders them hunted down and sacrificed — but learns that Burt is not the easy target he had anticipated…LEAD (23)
MALACHAI
AGE: 17-18 YEARS OLD. Preference for either football-player sized child or extraordinarily unique appearances. — Isaac’s right-hand man, this 18 year old youth heads the “army” of teens, armed with rude farm implements, that keeps order, insuring that Isaac’s will is done. Convinced that Isaac is a prophet of the true God, Malachai willingly does his leader’s bidding, however bloody. However, when Burt escapes his clutches, Malachai becomes Isaac’s scapegoat, doomed before his time. Trying his best to keep his faith intact and his courage high, Malachai bids his pregnant girlfriend farewell and walks out to meet He Who Walks Behind the Rows — a meeting from which no one has ever returned…LEAD (20)
PREACHER BOY
Seen in flashback to the 1960s, this fanatical youth preaches to his rapt congregation of farm children — who will soon become the Children of the Corn…10 speeches & 2 lines, 1 scene (1)
NAHUM
AGE: 5- 6 YEARS OLD. This boy is also a member of the fanatical Children of the Corn. Terrified, he confides to Malachai that he has just seen He Who Walks Behind the Rows. Soon thereafter, he wanders into the corn and is slain by Burt…7 speeches & 7 lines, 3 scenes (75)
RUTH
AGE: 13-16 YEARS OLD. This very pregnant teenager is Malachai’s girlfriend, who will shortly bear his child. When Isaac dooms Malachai to an early meeting with He Who Walks Between the Rows, Ruth is distraught, and questions the fanaticism that motivates their sect…8 lines, at least 4 scenes (67)
RED-HAIRED BOY/DAVID
One of Malachai’s “army,” this red-haired teenage boy follows orders unquestioningly — right to his doom…1 speech & 2 lines, at least 4 scenes (53)
BIG BOY/MARK
This armed and deadly teen is another of Malachai’s stalwart followers who meets an unfortunate end…3 lines, at least 3 scenes (53)
FRECKLED BOY
Another of Malachai’s “army,” this freckled boy asks Malachai why all adults are “sinners.” Soon, he also meets with doom…4 lines, at least 2 scenes (53)
PETER, JACOB AND DANIEL
These boys are sent into the tall corn to search for Burt. They are clearly terrified — with good reason, as it turns out…3 lines, at least 3 scenes apiece (75)
BLOODY KNIFE BOY
Seen in flashback, this ecstatic boy participates in a religious sacrifice…1 line, 1 scene
AMOS
AGE: 18 YEARS OLD. An older boy, doomed by Isaac’s knee jerk pronouncement, he walks bravely into the corn with a group of other youths — right into horror…1 speech & 2 lines, 1 scene (98)
PONYTAILED GIRL
AGE: AN ADULT WHO LOOKS 16. (18+ TO PLAY YOUNGER). Screaming with pain, she has a “sanctified” sexual encounter with an older boy on the church altar…no lines, at least 2 scenes (88) NUDITY REQUIRED.
OLDER BOY
AN ADULT WHO LOOKS 16. (18+ TO PLAY YOUNGER). This older teen participates enthusiastically in the ritualized sex atop the church altar.
