Downey brings Steve McQueen story to the screen

Robert Downey Jr will star in “Yucatan”, a movie based on an original story by the late, great superstar Steve McQueen, according to Deadline.

The pic, which Downey will produce with wife Susan, will see the “Iron Man” star play a renegade deep-sea salvage expert hired to steal a mysterious hidden treasure hidden deep underwater in the Mayan ruins of Yucatan.

The project was first set up at Warner Bros in 2005 after McQueen’s son Chad and godson Lance Sloane discovered the notebooks in an old trunk. The studio didn’t end up doing anything with it, so when the Downey’s stumbled across the material they snapped it up for their production company.

“Sherlock Holmes” scribe Anthony Peckham will write the pic.

Steve McQueen Online had a little bit more on the story adding, “Steve McQueen’s son Chad and godson Lance Sloane have recently found 1700 pages of highly detailed notes and storyboards which had long gone unnoticed in a couple of old trunks in Steve McQueen’s vault. What they have revealed is an epic treasure hunt/heist film which Steve had been personally researching and planning before his death. The story is set in Mexico and revolves around a group of thieves who attempt to steal an ancient cultural treasure buried beneath the Yucatan peninsula.”
