Emmerich’s next will be Fantastic!

A remake of a classic 1966 movie

I’m guessing Roland Emmerich would jump Queen Latifah’s bones in an instant – because he likes ‘em big. The man doesn’t know the meaning of a modest budget – nor the inability to do something that isn’t style over substance, but that’s another story – and since his arrival on the scene with the flashy “Stargate” in 1994 has been dishing out pricey eye-gasms like an overpriced peep show.

His latest? No less than a remake of the ambitious 60’s science fiction classic – and the movie that would later inspire Joe Dante’s “Innerspace” – “Fantastic Voyage”. “National Treasure” scribes Marianne and Cormac Wibberley will pen the redo, which will again tell the story of five scientists who are miniaturised and injected into a dying man’s bloodstream – just without Raquel Welch, regrettably.

James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment has agreed to produce the film, so it’s pretty much guaranteed the thing’s going to look a million bucks – or rather, $200 million bucks, which is what it’ll probably set them back at the end of the day – even if it isn’t as gripping as watching Dennis Quaid float around Martin Short’s ass.

Speaking of shrinking movies, how about an “Innerspace” sequel, Mr. Dante? – and I said ‘sequel’ not ‘remake’ you green-eyed suit schmucks! – I hate to think that Marty’s still stuck listening to Rod Stewart all these years later…. Twistin’ the Night Away. No seriously, there’s a real opportunity here. Quaid would do it. Short would do it. Robert Picardo would. Um, Meg Ryan probably wouldn’t (since it would mean working with her ex-husband, Quaid) but alas, there’s more reasons to do it – it ended on a cliffhanger for Christ’s sake! – than not to do it. Consider it Warner.
