Fox making movie about The Donner Party

20th Century Fox has nabbed the rights to a proposal for a novel about the true story of the infamous North America expedition known as the Donner Party.

According to Deadline, the studio is developing the story into a film which will employ a “Walking Dead”-style twist.

Luke Scott is writing and directing the film. Ridley Scott’s Scott Free will produce while Paper Lantern Lit co-founders Lauren Oliver and Lexa Hillyer will exec produce.

The Donner Party was a group of American pioneers who set our for California in a wagon train in 1846. Only 48 of the original 87 members of the party survived to reach California, many of them having eaten the dead in a bid to survive.

The novel, titled “The Hunger”, is being created by content developer Paper Lantern Lit, and will be written by former CIA analyst Alma Katsu. The book will be published in early 2018.
