"Goodbye" classic original

Just can’t leave the good ol’ films alone can they? Not content with monkeying with “Planet of the Apes”, jazzing up “The Italian Job”, dumbing down “Get Carter” or colorizing “Psycho”, Hollywood has turned their attention to remaking the classic Richard Dreyfuss/Marsha Mason film “The Goodbye Girl”, and you won’t believe what “dumb” sod is playing the male lead..

“Dumb”, as in “Dumb and Dumber” that is, with Jeff Daniels, signing on to reprise the role made famous by [Oscar Winner] Richard Dreyfuss in the original 1977 Neil Simon gem. The “Paula McFadden” to Daniel’s “Elliot Garfield” will be played by Patricia Heaton of “Everybody Loves Raymond” fame.

According to The Hollywood North Report, Neil Simon is to co-produce with veteran actor/director Richard Benjamin set to direct the TV film, which will shoot extensively in Vancouver. A Final preproduction rundown of locations is happening as we speak.

One’s guessing the film will follow the same storyline as the original – A divorced woman and her daughter come home to find that her boyfriend has left for an out of town job with no warning. This has happened before. The second surprise comes in the form of another actor who has sublet the apartment from her boyfriend (who did not mention the pair of females who would be in residence). After some negotiation the two decide to share the apartment even though she has vowed to stay away from actors.

Say, why not Dreyfuss again? Surely Jeff Daniels isn’t much younger?
