Gossip Monkey talks little golden things

Monkey predicts the Oscars!

Gossip Monkey here. Since Moviehole’s own Clint Morris is too busy to give us his Oscar picks this year (though I hear he’s just plain dissapointed that the dog from “Firewall” didn’t get a nod and is dodging them because of it), since he’s working on some little thing like a movie (priorities though, c’mon…), I thought I’d do them…and I see Adam has also done them over at the Weeksly Late Edition. Together, we’ve formed quite a form guide!

Okay, my weekenders, the glitz and glam of The Academy Awards will be for our viewing pleasure in a day, so here’s my speedy prediction on how it’s all gonna unfold.

Firstly, Jon Stewart! A great choice for a host. Sure I can appreciate the Billy and the Whoopie, but drugs aren’t really my thing and never have been, but host-wise – hoorah! I’m in full spirits already!

It’s very much a political affair too. Gaye, Commie, Racey and Jewie are all coming over to my basement to watch it all, as Lady Monkey is staying at her folk’s place. Anyways, let’s press on.

Best Picture
I’m sure it’ll be ‘Brokeback Mountain’. The deserved, however, is a different story althogether. ‘Goodnight and Good luck’ is my fave choice. As much as the Brokeback Gang continuously stated to various media “It’s a love story, so please don’t keep going on about its total Gayness, rampant scenes depicting man on man and calling it a ‘Gay Cowboy Movie’. (okay, they used different words). Those reports, however, hasn’t done the movie any harm at all though, right?

Achievement in Directing
There seems to be a patern with Mr. Spielberg. Helm a blockbuster for the Summer, bag an Oscar for a serious flick later on. It happened to him before, it could happen again, but I reckon Ang Lee will get this one.

Best Actor
A tough one really. Mr. Hoffman does well in ‘Capote’ and has bagged many awards already, but I’m kinda fed up with the bio-pic peeps winning all the time. I’d like to see David Strathairn win, but once again, he’s playing a real person, so I’d be contradicting myself in a hypocrite monkey madness way. It’ll be Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Best Actress
Will it be Reese “I get paid the budget for a modest action movie” Witherspoon for ‘Walk The Line’ or will it be Felicity “I play a man, could you tell?” Huffman for ‘Transamerica’? I’m gonna place a few bananas on Felicity Huffman. Mrs. H. Macy, I think you deserve it more.

Best Supporting Actor
George Clooney for ‘Syriana’. That was to the point, wasn’t it? George is George in a lot of movies and despite the part originally intended for Harrison Ford, nobody could have done it better.

Best Supporting Actress
This is a tough one, too. They’re all so good and it seems most of these flicks were made far less than Reese’s new pay packet. Rachel Weisz, as much as I like her, I’m hoping no. She got the Globe, but Oscar.. I’m kinda thinking it ain’t gonna happen. I’m feeling a Catherine Keener on this. Seriously, it’s gonna be a ‘Capote ‘Mountain Oscar fest methinks,

Best Original Screenplay
Is there such a thing nowadays? That’s a different story or unoriginal pinched idea, so we’ll move on. “Crash” was a good script, as was ‘The Squid and The Whale’ and ‘Goodnight and Goodluck’… I’m gunning for that, however the ‘Syriana’ script, as always by Stephen, is great stuff. Like Natalie Imbruglia, I’m torn. If only she was singing about movies and not a song that was sung by somebody else first, thus gaining all the credit for it all. ‘Syriana’ please.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Hmm, will ‘Munich’ get anything at this Awards Show? Shame, but I think not. It’d be nice to see the wee golden man go to Dan Futterman for ‘Capote’.

That’s all I seem to care for. How many bananas shall we bet on for my total “Way out, you’re so wrong-ness”? All shall be revealed.
