Hocus Pocus director talks potential sequel

A while back, Moviehole exclusively reported that Disney was looking at doing a sequel to ’90s family film fave “Hocus Pocus” – the bewitching laffer starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy had become somewhat of a VHS must-have in the Clinton-era – and while progress would seem to have slowed on the idea, director Kenny Ortega assures HollywoodLife that it will likely happen.

Ortega, out promoting his new teleflick “Descendants”, suggests that there isn’t any movement on a sequel these days but would love to do it if it did come to be.

“I wouldn’t mind doing a sequel,” the choreographer turned filmmaker said. “Even if it isn’t me, if someone else’s got to do it, [I want it].”

“That’s a movie that we made over 20 years ago, and there’s an enormous fan base. Every October there’s this huge push for the studio to do it again. I have a feeling that maybe someday, someone might revisit it,” he said “I think it’d be great to revisit it with the same women. The Sanderson Sisters deserve another opportunity to land in the middle of something and do it again. They’re too much fun. Kathy Nijimy, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler — that’s a winner right there.”

At one stage Disney were looking at doing a follow-up titled “Hocus Pocus 2 : Rise of the Elderwitch”.

The original squeaky-clean family escape told of three sister witches Winnie (Midler), Mary (Najimy) and Sarah (Parker) who, after 300 years, are resurrected in Salem Massachusetts on Halloween night, and it us up to two teenagers (Vnessa Shaw and Omri Katz), a young girl (a pre-“American Beauty” Thora Birch) to stop them. Silliness and special effects ensued.
