Interview : Georgina Rylance

Say what you will about the direct to video sequel trend, you can’t argue that they’re not giving actors a new arena to cut their teeth. Georgina Rylance is one such actress. The pretty starlet appears in both new sequels to “Hellraiser” and “The Prophecy”, and tells Clint Morris that although she’d love to see her work on the big screen, says direct to video sequels like these are satisfying hard core fans of both cult series.

What can you tell me about your role in the new "Prophecy" sequel, “Prophecy: Revelation”?
I play the character of Carla who is a hotel maid. Her body is then taken over by Belial, the angel searching for the book of God. He takes her further towards his search and then leaves her body for a new host leaving her dead. It was interesting playing a character who although looks fairly harmless and normal on the outside is in fact someone evil and weird. The great thing about this role is it’s like playing two entirely different roles.

How did you get the part?
The producers saw my work in Hellraiser and thought of me when casting the role.

Tell me about the new "Hellraiser"
She is involved in the cult of ‘Deader’, so she is a victim f life, i.e. she has left her family, and become involved with the wrong group of people. She thinks this will offer her freedom and excitement but in the end she regrets her decision and becomes rather sad, lonely and frightened.

Direct to DVD sequels seem to be quite popular at the moment. What’s your take on the trend?
If the films have a good cult following like Hellraiser and The Prophecy series then I think it’s great, however a theatrical release would perhaps develop a wider audience and attract new people who have previously not heard of these films.

You filmed these movies in Romania. What’s Romania like to work in?
We filmed in Bucharest which is amazingly beautiful in parts although sadly very run down in others. The crew were wonderful, they build amazing sets, working incredibly hard. They were also very welcoming. Although the language was hard to understand! However we all got on and I have found this with most film crews in other countries. Everyone gets on with the work, regardless of language etcetera.

And what’s next for you?
I have just finished Spartacus for Universal USA and a political drama for the BBC called
The Deputy.

Ok, to Television. You worked with Anthony Head on "Manchild". How was that?
My scenes were with Don Warrington, who is a lovely man. Anthony Head I met only at the beginning and at wrap – he is charming and put me at ease since it was only my 2nd job!

So what do you prefer doing : TV or Film?
It depends a lot on the writing, the role, if it a series or not. Doing a film or a long series is great because you get to learn so much more about the character and you have time to build upon what you are doing.

Both "The Prophecy" and "Hellraiser" are actually one of two new sequels. Do they film them in order particular order?
Deader was filmed first in The Hellraiser sequels, in the Prophecy it is one long story in two parts so it was filmed according to location.

When can we see the new films?
Don’t know!! Sometime in the New Year.

PROPHECY : REVELATION and HELLRAISER : DEADER will be released in 2004
