At 27, Reese Witherspoon is leading quite the life – Starring in some of today’s hottest movies, sharing a domicile with one of today’s hottest actors, and juggling motherhood with her ever-so demanding film work. CLINT MORRIS talks to the divine and endowed actress about how she keeps up with it all, whilst getting the scoop on her upcoming film “Legally Blonde 2”.
How did “Legally Blonde 2” go Reese?
Well filming is all wrapped up, and its out on July 2nd – everyone go and see it! – And it’s a very funny Movie and I’m not a funny person. It’s a good script, Elle is in Washington, D.C, and has put her wedding on hold, to stop animals being tested at a lab by a cosmetic company, who include bruisers birth parents, who she wants at the wedding. She arrives at the watergate, and gets help from an old door man – played by Bob Newhart – and he teaches her the way the political system works. Some of the old cast are back again, like Luke Wilson and Jennifer Coolidge.
With the success of the first “Legally Blonde” do you find you have a lot more pull in Hollywood now?
To be honest, yes! More people come up to me and give me scripts and tell me their thoughts and ideas. I just suppose I was very lucky with the success of Legally Blonde, which was very unexpected.
“Sweet Home Alabama” also did quite well too. What attracted you to that particular project?
I was attracted to this movie because it was kind of like my own life, the aspect of growing up in a small town, then moving to a big city and trying to make it, and then having to go back and hear what people think of you.
Is it true there’s a sequel in the works?
It’s the first I’ve heard of a sequel
You seem to be enjoying doing comedies/romantic comedies at present – in contrast to dramas – is that preferred?
Yes, I prefer comedies and romantics, to dramas and horrors, because when I did “Fear”, I hated all the screaming, and I just didn’t think that those kind of movies are for me.
How does having children alter your career? Less time?
I don’t think I have less time, because I have a wonderful husband who looks after our daughter when I Work, and vise-versa. I just think of myself as a normal mom, who juggles work, and home, just like Everyone else. People only see me as having a different job, because I’m shown in the spotlight.
Can you tell me a bit about the recently announced "Whiteout"? And "Vanity Fair"?
Well “Whiteout” is still in development, so I can’t really tell you much about it, but I’m a U.S marshal, Carrie Stetko, and I have to uncover the first murder ever in the Antarctic, just before the sun sets for six months. Carrie has to catch him before the sun sets, or she would be stuck with him for six months in darkness!
“Vanity Fair” is a 1820’s period piece, where I play Becky Sharp ( a lower-class girl who uses her wit and guile to make it through 1820’s London society, as the effects of the Battle of Waterloo are felt by her adopted family, the parents of Amelia, her best friend from boarding school. When Becky is unable to get Amelia’s brother to ask for her hand in marriage, she is forced to become a governess at a remote country house, where she is courted by both the elderly Sir Pitt Crawley, and his roguish younger son, Rawdon Crawley .We’ve already started filming this. It’s a good movie, so far!
You’ve also a Tennis movie in the works – is that next on the cards?
Well, the movie is in development, and I’m not too sure about it at the moment
Do you play Tennis?
I go and play tennis sometimes, with my trainer! But not for the movie, for fun!
What else have you got in the works?
At the moment I’m thinking of doing “Daughter of the Queen of Sheba”, and “Walk the line”, who I play June Carter Cash, along with Joaquin Phoenix. Unfortunately June has recently passed away, so I would like to send my deepest sympathy to her husband, and her family.
Do you have a favourite film you’ve done?
My favourite movie I have done is “Sweet Home Alabama”, because I could relate to it, and it was so much fun. I also enjoyed “Cruel Intentions”, because I got to work with Ryan, it was great working with him. We are looking for another project to work together on, but nothing has inspired us enough yet!
What might we find in Reese Witherspoon’s DVD Collection?
Well, I like Horror movies; I’ve got “Silence of the Lambs”, “Hannibal” and “Red Dragon”. I also have “Enough”, with Jennifer Lopez, and I like comedies, so I have the “American Pie” collection, and “Van Wilder’s Party Liaison”. But most of them are Ryan’s, he has better taste than me!!
