To say Ivan Reitman doesn’t have the kind of pull he had say, twenty years ago is an understatement. Whereas Reitman could, off the back of the gobsmackazing success of his “Ghostbusters” in 1984, essentially get anything and everything up, back in the Reagan-era – though it helped, of course, that Arnold Schwarzenegger thought he was a “genius” and would gladly attach himself to anything Reitman wanted to make – , be it “Twins”, “Kindergarten Cop”, he’s seemingly got his work cut out for him these days. His son Jason Reitman, director of “Juno” and “Up in the Air”, is likely finding it easier – largely because Jason makes the better film these days.
But Reitman and MonteCito partner Tom Pollock push on, and in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter talk about the films they’d like to do… but probably won’t.
Ivan, what will you direct next?
Reitman: There’s a lot of talk about Ghostbusters III. And there’s a very good script that the other cast members have read and liked. We’re just waiting for Bill Murray to read it.
You’re also developing a Baywatch movie. What’s the status?
Reitman: We still don’t have a script that’s makeable. I think it’s a big opportunity. This is a comedy, and I think we have a very interesting take — a classical idea that will be fresh for the world audience. It’s one of the best-known titles that’s out there.
Pollock: It has the opportunity to be a tentpole without costing a fortune.
And what about the sequel to Howard Stern’s Private Parts?
Reitman: I spoke to Howard. He brings it up all the time. There is a great sequel story in it. But I doubt it will happen. If he’s going to do another film, my guess is that it’s probably not going to be the sequel to Private Parts.
Reitman’s last film as director was “No Strings Attached”.
