James Cameron directing Cleopatra 3D!?

James Cameron mightn’t be immediately returning to Pandora, after all. The filmmaker is toying with the idea of stopping off at Cleopatra’s for a few months.

The Oscar Winning filmmaker is said to be circling a 3D Version of “Cleopatra” to star Angelina Jolie.

According to Deadline, the project is being fast-tracked because Brian Helgeland (“Payback”) has written a “brilliant script deserving of epic treatment” all about “what the Romans took from Egypt”.

Sony have the project – which is said to be encompass quite the colossal budget – on their to-do list for 2011, whether Cameron directs or not.

Jolie, who has long been attached to the film (one of two “Cleopatra” flicks in the works; another, with Steven Soderbergh directing, has Catherine Zeta Jones circling the lead role), said in a recent interview “I haven’t done a historical epic of that nature and she’s always been fascinating to me because I feel like, as much of her story has been done big, it’s never been done accurately. Not that any movie can get history perfectly well. There is no universal truth to history in some films, but you can get closer and I feel there’s a lot that has been unexplored about her. But there’s a lot that would have to come together for that to work.”
