Jolie, Aronofsky for Serena

On the weekend we heard that Angelina Jolie had dropped out of “Wanted 2”. At first, it was reported – though erroneously – that the former Mrs Pitt had exited the Universal sequel for the lead role in Alfonso ‘Children of Men’ Cauron’s “Gravity”. More the case, it seems, is that Jolie’s jumped ship to play lead-fiddle in Darren Aronofsky’s “Serena”.

Penned by Chris Kyle (“K19 : The Widowmaker”), the pic – based on Ron Rash’s “Serena : A Novel” – is set in 1929, in the the mountains of North Carolina, and fixes on “a man named George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, as they create a timber empire. Serena not only takes to the woods, but she also pushes her husband to commit more and more ruthless acts. When she learns she cannot bear a child, Serena sets out to murder the son her husband fathered illegitimately”, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Though the film’s still without it’s financing, the package has had no trouble – what with Jolie and “Wrestler” director Aronofsky attached – getting through the front door of every major production company in town. Doubt it’ll have any trouble finding a home.

Jolie is currently shooting “The Tourist” with Johnny Depp. Aronofsky is doing Ballet-centric thriller “Black Swan” with Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Kristina Anapau.
