Mad Men star takes on Sherlock Holmes!

Don’t remember the first time I saw Jared Harris. I’d like to say,er, “Lost in Space” – in which he played ‘old’ Will Robinson – but that would likely be doing the man injustice. Thing is, I think it was…. because I didn’t see “I Shot Andy Warhol” until after Stephen Hopkins’ space blunder. Whatever the case, the British actor has gone on to do some mighty booshy things – “Igby Goes Down”, “I Love Your Work”, “The Notorious Bettie Page”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. Has been a while since we’ve seen him in anything blockbuster-ish though… maybe “Lost in Space” put him off tentpoles for a spell!?

He’s going to give it another go though. Harris, says Latino Review, has signed to play the villainous Moriarty in “Sherlock Holmes 2” (a role long touted for Brad Pitt). The film reunites Harris with Warners, with whom he did “Benjamin Button” for.

Harris, currently playing Lane Price on TVs “Mad Men”, will play Holmes’ (Robert Downey Jr) nemesis in the Guy Ritchie-directed sequel.

Moriarty is a criminal mastermind, described by Holmes as the “Napoleon of Crime”. Doyle lifted the phrase from a real Scotland Yard inspector who was referring to Adam Worth, a real life model for Moriarty. As he is depicted as Holmes’ greatest enemy, Moriarty is considered to be the primary antagonist of the entire series.

Paul Freeman played Moriarty in 1988’s “Without A Clue” starring Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. The character was more recently reprised by Richard Roxburgh in “A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” (2003).

“Sherlock Holmes 2”, also starring Jude Law, Noomi Rapace and Stephen Fry, lenses shortly in ol’ London town.
