Moviehole Mailbag – 4/8/10

Q. Hey Clint, I read on Twitter you’ve sliced your leg on glass. Ouch! But anyway, here’s what you should do – if you already haven’t – clean, add a sterile gauze, and bandage. Leave the bandage on for as long as possible….even after you believe it has ‘gotten better’. If you notice the wound becomes inflamed, you might need to see your GP about medication. Hope you’re on the mend!- Amanda

A. Thanks Amanda! Yep, done exactly that… well, besides the part about removing the bandage early. Isn’t it better to let a wound breathe? Or am I thinking of an undead dude in a body bag?

Q. Hey, whats with all the smarte words! Nobody uses words like “money spinning” or “long gestating” and why do you have to reffer to movies as “tentpoles”? These are like words from the ’70s! – Matthew Price

A. If you don’t like, or can’t understand my writing, then don’t read the site – fuck, there’s so many Dr Seuss sites out there that are much, much more up your alley… big print too! lots of simple words! But FYI, I think you’ll find that, if you do a Google, several writers use the words you mentioned – Okay, maybe not ‘Money Spinning’, I may be alone there, but the others, for sure! Also, what’s wrong with the ’70s!? It produced Jaws, Jawas, Jaffas and, er, me.

Q.Will the Jonah Hill “21 Jump Street” movie be good? – Lisa

A. The script is good, if that helps? It’s a lot more action-centric than you might think.

Q. Where’s the “Thor” trailer? – Alek

A. Hello Alek… you won’t find it here, sorry. Paramount asked all us web guys not to run it – mainly because it’s a bootleg (I know, it’s a good one, but it’s apparently still an illegal copy) and they’re going to release it themselves in due course. Quite frankly, I can’t afford to be sued at the moment – still paying off my university loans. I don’t even know if you can find the “Thor” trailer online any more, I know YouTube has removed it. But for your pleasure, we do, however, have “The Green Hornet” trailer (here)- I know, not the same thing is it?

Q. Hey Clint, You were talking on Twitter about your favorite directors – I remember William Friedkin was one. I think he’s great too. Pity “Sorcerer” isn’t on a ‘Good’ DVD, hey? Who else do you like?

A. Oh, where do I start? David Lynch, John Frankenheimer, Cameron Crowe, John Badham, Peter Hyams, Joe Dante, Nick Castle, Quentin Tarantino, Rob Reiner, Robert Altman, Francis Ford Coppola, David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Lawrence Kasdan, Phil Noyce, Tom Holland. At one stage I might’ve even said John Singleton-  but we know why he’s no longer on the list.

Q. Nice scoop on the “Street Kings” sequel. Have you read the script? Is it good? – Bry

A. Have read some of it, it actually reads quite good for a direct-to-dvd flick. There’s some great moments in there between the mismatched cops, played by Ray Liotta and Shawn Hatosy, that I think might work well.

Q. Is “Drive Angry” really going to be as good as you say? or will “Twilight” fans be disappointed? – Xecon?

A. Er…Well, I believe Summit and director Patrick Lussier have the interests of the “Twilight” fans in their mind first and foremost. And why wouldn’t they!? Hang five… gotta get this laugh out. OK… back. Look, Lussier hasn’t made a bad film yet. Todd Farmer is one of the best genre writers out there. And the cast includes Bills Fichtner and Burke. It can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned. If, however, you’re going in expecting to see Billy Burke patting his despondent daughter to sleep in a scene you’re going to be sadly disappointed.

Q. Best Michael Cimino film? – Warlock

A. “Year of the Dragon”.

Q. I was reading your bit about the new Jack Ryan film – wasn’t the next one supposed to be based on Tom Clancy’s book “Red Rabbit”? – Steven

A. It was… right up until “The Sum of All Fears” left a skidmark in the box-office foyer and Paramount decided to ditch Ben Affleck. Clancy actually wrote the book with the inevitable film adaptation in mind, thus Ryan was a young buck in the story. “Rabbit” was one of several Clancy-penned films that Paramount put into turnaround a few years back – another being the John Clark-centric “Without Remorse”, that Joaquin Phoenix was set to star in. Good book that “Red Rabbit” though – in it, Ryan uncovers a plot to kill Pope John Paul II. Maybe a film of it will happen one day…

Q. What!? One of your favorite flicks is “Red October”? My grandma is more interesting than that film! – Wayne

A. Book us in for a session with Gran. She must be stimulating. We can have a chat while you’re watching “Wayne’s World 2”.

Q. You know what they should remake, “Young Guns”! – Richard

A.You, and Hollywood, might as well bend me over and stick me with your carrot now. The cheek! But for what it’s worth, you’re too late – there’s a “Young Guns” project in the works. No commission for you, buddo.

Q. Have you seen “Tomorrow : When the War Begun”? Whats the verdict? Good as the book? – Joanne

A. See it next week. And to be honest, I’ve never read it – in fact, I’d never even heard of it until it was announced the film was in production. Apparently all of the youngsters read it at school these days? I don’t know how long it’s been part of the curriculum for, or when the book was published, but it definitely wasn’t a book our year level read (we had “The Killing Fields” and “The Outsiders”). It looks very “Red Dawn” though, so that could only be a good thing.

Q. If I forget to post it on Facebook tomorrow, Clint – Happy Birthday for Thursday! – Jessica

A. Thanks Jess. Come down to McDonald’s if you get a chance, we will be having an Ice-Cream cake in the shape of ‘The Map’ from “Dora the Explorer”.

Q. Fuck you for trashing Adam Sandler’s new movie! It was great! – Wilson Family

A. Let me know when your sister’s finished giving you the rimjob, I’ll offer a cheeky retort for you!

Q. Thanks Moviehole for the tickets we got to “Centurion”! – Joanne

A. Absolute pleasure (well, not really, sending out these prizes costs me about $150 bucks a week) – glad you enjoyed it.
