There are more than ten movies being released in 2019 – and, we also imagine, more than ten of them will be worth the price of admission (but lets talk at the end of the year on that) – so it’s huckin’ fard to choose just ten that’ll be worth missing the latest episode of The Conners or a game of Candy Crush on the iPhone for. Nevertheless, we’ve looked at the form guide, studied the facts, and together come up with ten films we genuinely feel will be unmissable.
Now this doesn’t mean there won’t be an IMDB’s section worth of other gems out next year, these are just the more obvious ‘gotta see it!’ ones!
Terminator
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Diego Boneta, Mackenzie Davis
Because? It’s the first Terminator movie that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and James Cameron have been involved in, together, as a unit, a threesome, if you will, since 1991 masterpiece “Terminator 2 : Judgement Day”. Also, anything has to be better than “Terminator Genisys”.
Out November 1, 2019
Star Wars Episode IX
Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Billy Dee Williams, Carrie Fisher
Because? It’s the final instalment in the Skywalker saga and likely the last opportunity to see Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher (very likely in Carrie’s case *sniff*) and Billy Dee Williams as our childhood heroes. Also good to see J.J Abrams back at the controls.
Out December 20, 2019
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern
Because? It’s Tarantino. It’s Pitt. It’s DiCaprio. It’s Kurt. It’s Margot. It’s a Pulp Fiction-style caper set in the golden age of Hollywood. Bring that sh*t!
Out August 9, 2019
The Lion King
Starring Donald Glover, Beyonce, James Earl Jones
Because? Will Smith looks absolutely ridiculous in the Aladdin one. No, in all seriousness, he does… but that first trailer for Jon Favreau’s live-action (kinda) take on the biggest Disney animated movie of all time just encompasses so much more magic than the former. Plus.. James Earl Jones back as Mufasa!
Out July 18, 2019
It: Chapter Two
Starring Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Skarsgård, Sophia Lillis
Because? We’re all wondering if the clothesless saturnalia scene makes it into the second film, instead, right? Okay, maybe there’s a bit more going for the IT sequel than King rusticities – for starters, the first chapter was killer, so the sequel is bound to be just as good. Right? RIGHT!?
Out September 5, 2019
Joker
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz
Because? It’s Scorsese (producing, anyway). It’s Phoenix – one of the greatest actors of his generation. It’s De Niro – with Scorsese (!). It’s one of the few iconic movie characters (The Joker, of the Batman comics), whose story actually warrants a prequel!
Out October 3, 2019
The Irishman
Starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Ray Romano, Harvey Keitel
Because? Do you need to know anything else about the movie other than it’s a gangster flick directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Steven Zaillian, and stars Robert De Niro as Frank Sheeran and Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa? Ok, how about Joe Pesci!? How about Harvey Keitel!!? Even better – it’ll air on Netflix, so there’s no need to worry about theatre parking.
Out TBA
Toy Story 4
Starring Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack
Because? When the Pixar gang say they’ll never do a sequel, unless it’s called for it – we usually (*cough* “Finding Dory” *cough*) believe them! Plus Tom Hanks said the script is so beautiful it made him cry. That’s gotta mean something. Gump tearing up.
Out June 20, 2019
Avengers : Endgame
Starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Scarlett Johanson, Mark Ruffalo
Because? As good as Avengers : Infinity War was it was – let’s admit it – half-a-movie! We need to see the other half! So we’ve got no darn choice but to cough up to see how things end for Starky, Spidey, Strangey, Scarletty and co! (and the Russo’s haven’t let us down yet!)
Out April 24, 2019
Captain Marvel
Starring Brie Larson, Samuel L.Jackson, Jude Law
Because? It’s always the unsuspecting, lesser-known superhero movie that ends up claiming ‘years best’ honors, so here’s placing a few bucks down on Captain Marvel being one of the movie highlights of 2019! Brie Larson knows how to pick ‘em, too.
Out March 8
