New Twilight book swaps characters’ genders

Stephenie Meyer is giving Bella and Edward sex-changes, kind of.

The author of the”Twilight” novels has published a new book, titled “Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined”, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the best-selling franchise, but there’s a twist: the genders of the main characters have been swapped.

So the Bella Swan character (played by Kristen Stewart in the film adaptation) is now a male named Beau, vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson in the film) is Edythe and werewolf Jacob Black (played by Taylor Lautner) is now Julie.

“I wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary and the publisher wanted, like, a foreword and I thought, ‘Well, maybe something more interesting,’” Meyer told Good Morning America.

The author also wanted to prove that Bella isn’t a “damsel in distress”, as many fans have expressed, but a “human in distress”.

“It’s always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be… in distress. We don’t have the powers,” she said. “I thought, ‘What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,’ and, you know, it’s about the same. The further you get in, the more it changes because the personalities get a little bit different, but it starts out very similar and really, it really is the same story because it’s just a love story and it doesn’t matter who’s the boy and who’s the girl. It still works out.”
