Sad day for fans of scripted drama, one of the best shows on the box, TNT’s “Men Of A Certain Age” has been given the chop.
Loved this show; a brilliantly performed and realistically plotted hour, “Men” stars Ray Romano (also the co-creator), Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula as three middle-aged men all navigating the choppy waters of divorce, separation, relationships and sports-betting. Despite critical acclaim, even a couple of award nominations, the show struggled in the ratings. As a consequence, the show’s second season will be it’s last.
”Men of a Certain Age” focuses on Joe (Romano), a friendly, 40-something, slightly neurotic, recently separated father of two who had dreams of being a professional golfer but instead owns and runs a party store. He has two best friends: Owen (Braugher), an overstressed husband and father who is a car salesman at his dad’s dealership; and Terry (Bakula), an offbeat, handsome, intelligent and still-struggling-to-make-it actor. The three men have been best friends since college but now, in their 40s, are navigating through the second act of their lives.
“TNT has been proud to be a part of Men of a Certain Age for two seasons,” TNT said in a statement posted on TVLine.com. “TNT has been proud to be a part of Men of a Certain Age for two seasons. While the show has featured great storytelling and impeccable performances, the audience simply hasn’t built to the point where we can continue the series. This was an extremely difficult decision for us. We wish Ray Romano, Mike Royce and the terrific cast and crew of Men of a Certain Age the very best and look forward to exploring new programming possibilities in the future.”
Though Braugher snagged an Emmy Nomination yesterday for his role on the show, it wasn’t enough to convince the brass that the show deserved a third season. “Men” was only getting around 1.8 million viewers and a 0.4 demo rating.
