Red Granite is developing a remake of “Papillon” with Danish helmer Michael Noer on board to direct.
“Prisoners” scribe Aaron Guzikowski wrote the remake of the 1973 film about Henri ‘Papillon’ Charriere, a petty criminal who is unjustly convicted of murder in 1930’s France. He’s condemned to life in a notorious South American penal colony where he meets Louis Dega, a quirky convicted counterfeiter. In exchange for protection, Dega agrees to finance Papillon’s prison escape, ultimately resulting in a lasting friendship.
Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman starred in the original film which was based on a memoir by Charriere.
Producers are Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland of Red Granite with Ram Bergman and Roger Corbi. David Koplan, Yan-Fischer-Romanovsky, Joshua D. Maurer, Terrence Chang and Martin Hellstern are exec producers.
