Phoenix to play Poe?

Retired actor Joaquin Phoenix is looking to take up performance art as an, er, hobby.

Phoenix, who famously quit the game he made his name in after “Two Lovers” last year, will reportedly star in a new film based on Daniel Stashower’s book “The Beautiful Cigar Girl”.

Speaking to India Times, sound-recordist Resul Pookutty (“Slumdog Millionaire”) explained that ”It is a very special challenge because I have to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854” and that Phoenix will play famed author Edgar Allen Poe in a story that chronicles an eerie real-life event that the Lenore writer experienced shortly before his death in 1849.

Not that it looks like going anytime soon – it’s been in the works for years – but Robert Downey Jr has been linked to another film about Poe, this one from writer/director Sylvester Stallone.
