Someone’s seen The Square!

Reader ‘Chris’ writes in with an advance review of the new Joel/Nash Edgerton flick “The Square”. I was invited to see the film last week, but unfortunately the next fortnight is crazy for me… and had to take a raincheck (Davin will be covering the film, and interviewing the Edgerton boys, for MH) but I’ll try and catch it when I return to Melbourne.

Here’s our first reader review of the flick…

The Square

by  Chris Dzelde

Hi Clint……use if you want, but I really want to trumpet a great Aussie film.

As an Aussie, the phrase “new Australian film” sometimes fills me with dread. Sure, we’ve had our hits (Gallipolli, Mad Max, Wolf Creek) but, we have had our misses. (Misses too many to mention for this article, but I will say “Yahoo Serious” to cover many).

THE SQUARE is perhaps the best Australian film I have ever seen.

There it is. Absorb it.

Joel and Nash Edgerton have executed a brilliant thriller that misses no steps, features brilliant performances, and is a testament to the disturbing traits that reside in every one of us.

So, okay – it’s Hitchcock. But I don’t say that lightly. The performances are so tense, the direction and cinematography so well-crafted – if you don’t yell out loud in shock at the screen at some point, there is clearly something wrong with your brain.

That said – here it is: Married man has affair. Girlfriend finds large amounts of money via her druggy, stupid, bogan husband.  Married man wants to score lots of money and elope with cute girlfriend.

A Simple Plan.

Yes, this flick evokes Raimi’s film – small things go wrong, and escalate to an alarming degree. To say any more about the plot would ruin everything. It is also a film I think will remind us of how clever Alfred Hitchcock was.

See this film. If you like filmmaking, if you like accurate character development, if you want to watch a film of hope and hell – you will be well rewarded.

Honestly, the best surprise film of the year, and it gives me a surge of great hope for the Australian Film Industry..

Hope you get to see THE SQUARE soon. I have never been in a cinema by myself and leapt out of my seat in shock. Honestly, it’s a good one.

Couldn’t praise it more. Let’s support it.
