Sony aquires Descender

It never ceases to amuse me when studio’s snap up the film rights to comic books that haven’t even been released yet! But I guess the box office results of this genre speak volumes.

Anyway, whether you’re fist-pumping or face-palming, the yet-to-be-released comic “Descender” is now Sony’s to turn into a movie.

Created by New York Times bestselling author Jeff Lemire and comic artist Dustin Nguyen, the story follows a lifelike boy robot whose machine DNA may hold the key to the origin of the planet-sized bots that wiped out entire worlds. He’s therefore the most wanted robot in a universe that has outlawed androids.

Lemire and Nguyen will exec produce the film with Josh Bratman producing.

“It was a competitive situation for ‘Descender,’ and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series,” said Lemire and Nguyen in a statement. “We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential.”

Oh, and for the record, the comic book will be released on March 4!
