Superhero sequel is Brad Bird’s next film

Director Brad Bird (“Tomorrowland”) says his next film will be a sequel to “The Incredibles”.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bird – who, in addition to the first “Incredibles”, also helmed “The Iron Giant” and “Mission : Impossible – Ghost Protocol” – says the film is currently in the writing stages. A lot of the ideas he has for the sequel were ones he had first time around but just couldn’t squeeze them all in.

“I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like,” Bird said. “I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit, and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie.”

Though it’s still a few years away – animated films take a long time to make – the “Incredibles 2” would ideally unite the cast of the 2004 original, including Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Jason Lee and Samuel L. Jackson.

There’s also the possibility of doing another biggish film at Disney – a “Star Wars” film.

“I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up [a film in the franchise], and J.J. [Abrams] got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too,” Bird said. “But I’m writing [the Incredibles sequel], and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.”
