Terminator sinking at B.O

Um, you know how I was saying nobody takes any notice of critics, or the online community, and thus will still rush out to see “Terminator Salvation”? Seems I was as wrong as a three-titted albino flasher.

Fox assumed Warner’s “Salvation” would use “Night at the Museum 2” as it’s snot rag over the  weekend. Instead, the Ben Stiller-sequel had the last laugh, covering Christian Bale’s sorry ass in nose junk.

“Museum 2” grossed an estimated $53.5 million from 4,096 theaters Friday through Sunday, while “T4” grossed an estimated $43 million from 3,530 runs. Opening Thursday to $13.4 million, “T4’s” cume is $56.4 million. By contrast, Warner’s “Watchmen” – widely regarded by many as a flop – opened bigger.

So what’s happened here? Have people stayed because there’s read Harry Knowles’ flaming review of the film? (or for that matter, Brian Orndorf’s?), or is it the simple fact that nobody much cares about a “Terminator” film that doesn’t star Arnold Schwarzenegger? I’d say it’s a little bit of both – the negative reviews definitely haven’t helped, but when people think “Terminator” they think Arnold. I know I do.

I wonder how the weak-kneed performance of the latest sequel is going to affect the next? Might we see Bale replaced by Edward Furlong due to budget-cuts… or will they merely CGI Bale’s face onto John Connor’s body next-time-around so they don’t have to pay him his full fee?
