Trailer for Paul Rudd’s Our Idiot Brother

My God, how far has Paul Rudd come!? Feels like yesterday he was showing off his goatee and trying to bed semi-sister Alicia Silverstone in “Clueless”, doesn’t it? (For the record, Josh and Cher in “Clueless” weren’t blood-related but still…. ick!) I even remember those TV spots for “Halloween : The Curse of Michael Myers” and that doesn’t feel that long ago either! remember those!? (Yes, the “Halloween” that looked shite). And then there was “Romeo & Juliet”, in which he played… the guy that didn’t end up with Juliet. But somewhere between “Clueless”, “Romeo & Juliet” and that little-seen comedy gem “Overnight Delivery” (If you haven’t seen it, check it out! You Larry Drake fans will be in heaven!), Rudd transformed into an out-and-out comedy superstar… never to battle Michael Myers again. Probably. And I guess if he’s to send a thankyou card to anyone it’s Judd Apatow; Apatow cast Rudd in “Anchorman : The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and then “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” and those two films really got the ball running for ‘Funnyman’ Rudd. Since then of course he’s starred in numerous other flicks but it’s his Apatowian efforts – like “Role Models” and “Knocked Up” – that Rudd’s become best known for.

“Our Idiot Brother” looks like it could be the latest golden delicious to fall from the Apatow tree – particuarly since a couple of Apatow regulars, like Elizabeth Banks, feature in it too – only it’s not. This is actually Jesse Peretz ‘dramedy’ – and one that garnered some sizzling reviews when it premiered at Sundance earlier in the year. The film stars Rudd as a dimish but friendly young man who, after getting in trouble with the law, is passed around to each of his sisters (Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer) while on a plight to fix himself. It looks quite good…. as you’ll see from the trailer :
