Been at a Xmas party tonight – the film distribs here throw a few beers our way this time of year; always appreciated! – so haven’t had a chance to put together a bunch of singular articles for the day. Instead, we trust you’ll enjoy this alternative program : Various News Items.

– Hilary Swank will star in “The Resident,” a thriller set to shoot next May under the reconstituted Hammer Films banner. Swank will play a doctor who moves into a Brooklyn loft. Becoming suspicious that she’s not alone in her new home, she discovers her landlord is a stalker.

– Jay Baruchel (“Knocked Up”) is negotiating to play the title role in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” for Walt Disney Pictures. He joins Nicolas Cage, who plays the sorcerer in the Jon Turteltaub-directed live-action pic.

– Director Stephen Sommers and writer Stuart Beattie gave Entertainment Weekly some dirt on their upcoming “Tarzan”. “The action-adventure icon will trash his loincloth and throw on a pair of khakis for the next big screen take on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic character,” says the magazine. “Think ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ with buffed-and-tanned actors flying through the jungle and sprinting up trees, parkour-style.”

– Nicolas Stoller, writer of the upcoming “Gulliver’s Travels” remake starring Jack Black, tells Latino Review, “It’s gonna be awesome. Basically it’s with Jack Black who plays a modern day Gulliver who gets transported back to Lilliputan…I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say but the director is this guy named Rob Letterman who just did this movie called Monsters vs. Aliens, which is an awesome Dreamworks animated movie, and I’m just seeing the initial sketches and drawings. It’s gonna be pretty exciting. It’s a big fantasy comedy movie.”

– Steven Seagal is returning to Twentieth Century Fox. The action star will re-team with the shingle, also responsible for his 90s effort “Marked for Death”, on “The Keeper” a “Man on Fire”-esque actioner a bodyguard for a young girl.

– A new ending for “Friday the 13th”? Only Bloody Disgusting knows.

– Tim Burton’s next could be “Dark Shadows”, says Collider. The Johnny Depp-starrer could be in front of the cameras as early as next Summer.

– A remake of “Romancing the Stone” is in the works (for fucks sake!). Daniel McDermott, the co-writer of “Eagle Eye”, will be responsible for coming up with the jazzed-up screenplay.

35 new images from Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” are online. Eastwood stars as an iron-willed and inflexible Korean War veteran, living in a changing world, who is forced by his immigrant neighbors to confront his own long-held prejudices.

– Russell Brand is set to star in a remake of the Dudley Moore classic “Arthur”. Brand is meeting with scribes to write the screenplay, which will be produced by MBST’s Larry Brezner, whose credits range from “Good Morning, Vietnam” to HBO’s recent “Little Britain USA.”

– Neve Campbell is close to returning to series television with a co-starring role on NBC’s midseason drama “The Philanthropist.” Show centers on Teddy Rist (James Purefoy), a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need around the world.

– A remake of John Carpenter’s “They Live” is in the works. Strike, the company behind the “Dawn of the Dead” remake, are acquiring the redo rights.

– Galle Anne Hurd, producer of “Punisher : War Zone”, tells Latino Review that a “Hulk” sequel is a possibility. “..The more that the online community says, ‘We want to see a sequel –’ the more likely it is that it’ll happen”.

Coming Soon caught up with George Lucas who confirmed plans for a fifth “Indiana Jones”. “Yes – we’re looking for a “MacGuffin,” which is an object that he goes after. They’re very hard to come by!” as for whether Shia LaBeouf and Karen Allen will return? ”It really depends on what it is Indy goes looking for and then how the story falls out of that, and then how convenient or inconvenient to have the group there”.

– For the first time ever in the history of the Academy Awards, Australian viewers will have the chance to watch all the glamour of the biggest night in Hollywood as it happens – Movie EXTRA is going to show it live from 10am on Monday 23rd February 2009(AEST).

– Looks like “Knight Rider” is on the way out. The network has cut the episode order back from 22 to 17. NBC picked up “Rider” for a full season in late October, relatively early in the show’s run. Though modestly rated, the numbers had seemed to level off. After the pickup, “Rider” declined — and kept declining — with the most recent episode watched by 5.2 million viewers and earning a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49.

– David Lynch will produce Alex Cox’s “Repo Man” sequel, with filming set for next month. Meanwhile Scout Taylor-Compton says Rob Zombie will not be directing her in a “Halloween” sequel.
