If Wan and Whannell taught us anything, it’s that Hollywood is much more likely to watch, possibly even respond to something they don’t have to physically read (and therefore ‘work’ their eyes as much). If you can cut a short trailer, or even film a clip from your completed script (or treatment), you might just find you’ll have more luck convincing an exec that you’re the guy to make/write whatever movie you’re trying to make than the chap that Fed Ex’s a 130-page page script to the man’s office. I can tell you from experience, Mr greenlight is not going to read that… not right away anyway… but a 3 minute teaser trailer? Easy done.. lunch time entertainment. Your story still mightn’t “be right for the company” and it’s possible it might also “need some work”, but you’ll still have a leg up on the competition.
Yesterday we told you about a new “Mortal Kombat” series that’ll air exclusively over the internet. And you’ll recall that that was the result of a filmmaker, Kevin Tancharoen, just going out there and shooting a nice little trailer. The trailer, “Mortal Kombat : Rebirth”, caught the attention of not only film fans on the internet, but the studio.
Today, there’s a new short film quickly garnering fans across the www : “Fight the Foot”, a teaser for a would-be “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes are working on a reboot of the popular ’80s series as we speak, but the lad behind this thing is obviously trying to let them… someone… know that he believes the new film should encompass more of a ‘real world’ feel than the previous films in the series. I think it works. Will he get a call from Mr Bay? Wouldn’t surprise me.
