Worthington is Universal’s new Dracula

Back in January, Latino Review reported that Sam Worthington was the frontrunner to star in director Alex Proyas’ neck-nibbling Vlad the Impaler biopic, “Dracula : Year Zero”.

At the Australian International Movie Convention on the Gold Coast today, the director of Universal Pictures Mike Baard announced that his shingle is spearheading the project and that it will be filmed down under with local actors and crew.

It’s believed Worthington is indeed one of those local actors onboard the film. No confirmation from the studio yet though.

Proyas (“Knowing”, “Garage Days”) recently told Moviehole that “Year Zero” will be “a medieval epic” rather than a straight-up horror flick.

“It’s actually a composite of [the Vlad the Impaler story], of the origins of the legend, and the Bram Stoker book. You could see it as a prequel to Bram Stoker’s novel, in some ways. All the cool bits out of Francis Coppola’s “Dracula”. You can see it that way as well.”

The project will get underway in the New Year.
