Brighid Fleming – Labor Day

In “Labor Day”, Kate Winslet plays a single mother who falls for an escape convict. Brighid Fleming, whose previous credits include “Gamer” and “The Burrowers”, plays a pivotal role in the movie. Moviehole had the chance to speak to the young actress, performing since she was 3 years-old, about the opportunity to work with such celebrated thesps as Winslet and Brolin.

Brighid, your name is beautifully distinct; do you know where it comes from?

My name comes from the celtic goddess of strength, story telling, bards, and beer. Yes beer.

Love it! Tell us about where you grew up..

I grew up in New Mexico. It was great there! Great skies, sunsets, and snow! They even had some great theaters and now they are filming a lot in NM. But I knew that I needed to go to Cali to pursue my dream. Despite living in California, NM will always have a piece of my heart.

Were you parents always supportive of your decision to want to be an actress?

My parents were always very supportive of whatever I wanted to do for a career. They definitely didn’t think I would want to be an actor. I wouldn’t either considering that my mom is an engineer and my father was a scientist but that’s what I loved. They supported me 100%.

You do a lot of stage work, in addition to film and television. What are the most noticeable differences working in theater to on film?

In theater you grow more of a family. You get a family in TV too, but it’s a little different in theater. Also, in theater you have the thrill of everything being live and having to not mess up.

Can you tell us who you play in “Labor Day”?

I play a promiscuous teenager who is sent to live with her father. She wants to go to a private school but is not allowed. She is bored out of her mind in the small town and then she meets Henry.

What was it like working with Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet? Did you learn a lot from them?

It was great to get to meet Kate! I have definitely learned from her performances in Mildred Pierce and the Titanic.

Was it a long shoot for you? Long days?

The days for minors are never too long. They could only keep us nine and a half hours because of labor laws but it aways feels like less time than that.

Do you have to do school at the same time as shooting a movie? How does that work?

I have school at the same time as filming. I have a studio teacher that teaches me while I work for 3 hours a day. The teachers are usually pretty cool and can help me with my school work.

What is next for you?

I am currently rehearsing a new play by Eric Rudnick called DAY TRADER. It opens at the Bootleg Theatre in January. My short film A.B.S, which I wrote and directed is currently in festivals. My dream is to one day turn it into a web series.
