With “Star Wars” now housed at Disney, no surprise (really) to hear that Disney-owned net ABC is considering offering air-time to the long-gestating live-action “Star Wars” series.
The show, touted for years by former Lucasfilm chiefs George Lucas and Rick McCallum, would fix on some of the other (in other words, it’s unlikely you’d see famous famous like Darth Vader and Han Solo) intergalactic fighters, foes and freaks that make up the galaxy of the films. The events within the episodes would take place between the 20-year period between “Star Wars Episode III : Revenge of the Sith” and “Star Wars Episode IV : A New Hope”.
ABC President Paul Lee, wheeled out to stump the press this week on the net’s 2013 offerings as part of the TCA’s, mentioned the live-action series as one of the possible small-screen ventures they might be considering doing with Lucasfilm. Nothing definite though.
Collider quoted Lee :
“We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, we’re not sure what yet. We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.”
Lee admits that with “Star Wars Episode VII”, due out 2015, being set in the same universe as the show, it might be tricky doing it at the moment.
“It’s going to be very much up to the Lucasfilm brands how they want to play it,” he said. “We got to a point here with Marvel, a very special point, where we’re in the Marvel universe, and very relevantly so, but we’re not doing The Avengers. But S.H.I.E.L.D. is part of The Avengers. So maybe something oblique is the way to [approach the Star Wars universe] rather than going straight head-on at it.”
Though 50-odd scripts are already in the can for the “Star Wars” series, the show has been on the indefinite back-burner because of the high cost of producing such a series.
