American Teenager the frontrunner for Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man sequel

“Secret Life of an American Teenager” star Shailene Woodley is in talks to join Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in Columbia’s sequel to “The Amazing Spider Man”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Woodley is in negotiations for the role of Mary Jane Watson; Peter Parker’s red-headed love interest in the “Spider Man” comic book series; a role previously portrayed by Kirsten Dunst in the Spidey movies starring Tobey Maguire as our web-flinging hero.

With love triangles fast becoming a Hollywood and literary staple, it’s no surprise that this upcoming Spiderman flick is set to feature a great deal of romantic tension between Peter Parker beauties Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson.

Marc Webb will reprise his role as director after “The Amazing Spiderman” grossed $752 million worldwide; Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce the sequel, which has been written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
Most of the sequel’s details are shrouded in secrecy; for example, no villain has yet been announced for the film.

Having starred in “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” for five seasons, Woodley’s star seems fast on the rise since she was cast as George Clooney’s daughter in last year’s stand-out flick “The Descendants”. Her portrayal of the role saw her receive various awards nomination, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress

It was announced earlier this week that “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” has been cancelled, with the final episodes airing in March 2013.
