Amy Adams doing Steve Martin’s An Object of Beauty

He may be best known as that “wild and crazy” funnyman from films usually adorning a Nancy Meyers, Frank Oz or Adam Shankman credit, but Steve Martin’s actually got a lot more going on than rubbery legs and funny faces. Besides being quite the art expert, he’s also a very intelligent and rather clever novelist. Those who’ve read the actor’s “Shopgirl” can attest to the man’s terrific ability to nail character, real-life and even romance in literary form.

The film version of that book, in which Martin shone in a rare dramatic performance as an older suitor for young Claire Danes, was also a delight.

Now comes word that Martin’s “An Object of Beauty” novel is also going the cinematic route.

Here’s the backflap summary of that book :

Lacey Yeager is young, captivating, and ambitious enough to take the NYC art world by storm. Groomed at Sotheby’s and hungry to keep climbing the social and career ladders put before her, Lacey charms men and women, old and young, rich and even richer with her magnetic charisma and liveliness. Her ascension to the highest tiers of the city parallel the soaring heights–and, at times, the dark lows–of the art world and the country from the late 1990s through today.

Hollywood it girl Amy Adams, whose career is still ablaze, will play the lead role of Lacey, says THR.

“We couldn’t be happier to be working with the brilliant Amy Adams on this adaptation of Steve Martin’s smart novel,” said producers Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray, of Maven Pictures. “This project continues on Maven’s mission of making films that highlight strong female characters and talent.”

It sounds like a doozie of a story (dare I call it an edgy, less retarded version of “The Secret of My Success”!?) and who else thinks Amy will end up on an Oscar ballot sheet for the film?

Speaking of Martin and his versatility, if you’ve never seen his performance in David Mamet’s “The Spanish Prisoner” – YOU MUST!
