Anthony Mackie to play The Falcon in Captain America : Winter Soldier

Jeremy Renner’s now got himself a pair of tights, and seems his “Hurt Locker” co-stars are hoping to follow suit.

Anthony Mackie has been cast as the Falcon, one of comic’s only Black superheroes, in “Captain America : The Winter Soldier”.

The Joe and Anthony Russo directed sequel is based on a comic-arc which see’s Cap’s mate Bucky being brainwashed to act and get about as a Russian assassin.

Chris Evans returns in the title role, with Sebastian Stan presumably contracted to reprise Bucky.

The Hollywood Reporter, who has the news on Mackie’s anointment as The Falcon, has the following specs on the character :

The character, Sam Wilson, is Harlem-based and had many street adventures with Cap in the 1970s comics, when he served as his partner. He derives his powers from a suit that allows him to fly and enhances his strength. He can also telepathically talk to birds. In current comics, Falcon is a key player in many of Cap’s espionage adventures.

Mackie’s other credits include “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter” and “Gangster Squad”.

“Captain America : Winter Soldier” is in cinemas April 4, 2014.
