Aronofsky quitting RoboCop?

Update! : Peter from Slashfilm checked in and says he’s got the transcript of the conversation. He’s pretty sure Aronofsky was just trying to steer the conversation back towards “The Wrestler”.  Read the transcript at the abovementioned link.

Is Darren Aronofsky about to walk from the “RoboCop” reboot?

Mike Sampson from JoBlo.com filed this report (Shit, I sound like a 60 Minutes reporter) earlier today :

I heard some rumors about a month ago that things might not be going well in the universe of the ROBOCOP remake. Namely that Darren Aronofsky, who was hired this past summer to direct the “reimagining,” was, let’s say, losing interest in the project. Today Aronofsky called in to the Howard Stern Show to promote THE WRESTLER and when asked about ROBOCOP, Aronofsky said that he was working on the script but that he’s “not sure” if it was still going to happen.

As much as I’d have liked to have seen what the visionary director would’ve done with the ”RoboCop” property, I don’t think it’s the right move for him. Aronofsky’s better than it. The guy is known for coming up with fresh and highly-charged original movies – he’s one of the few – and maybe we should let him do just that? Brett Ratner and Steve Brill are always going to be available to take on the sloppy seconds. It’s likely that if Aronfsky does leave “RoboCop” he’ll try and get his long-gestating Mark Wahlberg/boxer movie “The Fighter” up.  Much better move.
