Aronofsky’s RoboCop now a comic?

Update! : Some sources suggest Aronofsky is actually working on a “Batman : Year One” comic book. “Year One”, of course, is a Caped Crusader prequel that the filmmaker was attached to for a while. Is it possible that the script is being retooled for a comic? Maybe. It’s also possible both “Batman” and “RoboCop” are getting the comic book treatment.

We’ve been hearing about Darren Aronofsky’s planned reboot of “RoboCop” for a few years now. So where is it? Well, pick a reason – costs (bloody expensive film to make), disagreements between the suits and Aronofsky, MGM’s financially-f*cked status…. I’m sure there’s more to the story, but that’s the flag on the tower. Not even ED-209 can get the thing moving.

Suggesting the film mightn’t be anywhere near a greenlight, and confirming assumptions that this “RoboCop” will be much more an Aronofsky movie than a studio movie (Reason it hasn’t been greenlit #521), the filmmaker has revealed that he’s adapting the screenplay for comic form first – then, depending on the feedback, they’ll do the film. Maybe.
Okay, so the “Black Swan” director doesn’t actually state in his interview with Clothes on Film that it’s “RoboCop” he’s giving the comic treatment too, but it’s safe to say that’s what is. Hear me out…In April of last year it was revealed that Aronofsky was working on a comic version of his “RoboCop” with Dynamite Entertainment. Sure, it could be something else, but this makes the most sense.

Question: Do you ever feel like realizing your vision of something like the Batman story that you were working on [Batman Year One] as a comic book?

Darren Aronofsky: Well, we’re actually doing one. It hasn’t really been announced, I don’t know if I should give you the scoop! But we’re getting there. We’re doing a comic book of a script that’s really hard to make and we’re going to do a comic version first and see what happens.

Aronofsky, who is about to get going on “The Wolverine” with Hugh Jackman, said in December that he’s still interested in bringing his ‘RoboCop’ to life.

“Well, ‘RoboCop’ may still happen one day, who knows? It’s MGM and hopefully they’ll clear their stuff up and I’m still interested. David Self wrote a great script, but the company went under so…”

Considering Aronofsky had hinted, just prior to giving those comments, that he had left the project behind, something’s definitely helped change in mind; could it be five letters? C-O-M-I-C?
