Baz Luhrmann finds his Tom Buchanan in Tattoine

Update! Joel Edgerton has snagged the role of Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhramnn’s “The Great Gatsby”, according to Deadline. The director said in a statement : “In casting Tom one had to find an actor who could credibly be (as Fitzgerald describes him) ‘one of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Haven,’ had five-star acting chops and in the big dramatic showdown scenes between Gatsby and Tom, hold the screen against Leonardo DiCaprio, in the appropriate age group. Any wonder, it has been a long and thorough journey. The simple truth is that Joel came into our rehearsal space in New York and fulfilled all of the above criteria, and then some.”

Joel Edgerton and Luke Evans are circling the role of Tom Buchanan in director Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby”, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Ben Affleck was originally in talks to play Buchanan, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, but couldn’t squeeze it in between directing assignments.

Aussie Edgerton is one of the next big things in Hollywood; he just missed out on the lead role in “The Bourne Legacy” and came close to snagging James Bond a couple of years ago but has the lead roles in “The Thing” (prequel) and an upcoming Bin Laden/Navy SEAL project that Kathryn Bigelow is putting together.

Evans has appeared in such films as “Tamara Drewe”, “Clash of the Titans”, “Immortals” and “The Three Musketeers”. Like Edgerton, the British actor is one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood at the moment – he was also up for “Bourne”.

May the best man win.
