Ben Whishaw in talks for Mary Poppins sequel

Ben Whishaw is in negotiations to bring an original “Mary Poppins” character back to the big screen for Disney’s sequel.

Whishaw would play a grown-up Michael Banks, who is reportedly a key figure in the new story. According to THR, “Banks experiences a personal loss and sees the return of his big sister Jane. That results in the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt), who teams up with her lamplighter friend Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) to help the family.”

Meryl Streep is also in talks to join “Mary Poppins Returns” which will be directed by Rob Marshall.

Producers are Marshall, John DeLuca and Marc Platt. The screenplay is written by David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers, with Marc Shaiman composing an all-new score and Shaiman and Scott Wittman writing original songs.
