Bette Midler will play Mae West in HBO Film’s project about the Hollywood star, reported Deadline.
Midler will also exec produce with William Friedkin (“The Exorcist”), who will direct, and Jerry Weintraub, who recently executive produced HBO Film’s “Behind The Candelabra”.
Harvey Fierstein will pen the script.
The film, titled “Mae West”, is based on West’s autobiography “Goodness Had Nothing To Do With It”. It follows West’s rise to fame in New York City as she became one of the highest-grossing stars of the 30’s. She wrote and starred in her scandalous Broadway show “Sex”, which had her prosecuted and sentenced to 10 days in prison on charges of “corrupting the morals of youth”, before landing her first movie deal with paramount at age 39.
