Biggs, Levy & Scott sign for American Reunion

Last year we reported that a new “American Pie” movie, one that would reunite the cast of the first three films (as opposed to the direct-to-video spin-offs that followed the original trilogy), was in the works over at Universal. “Harold & Kumar” scribes Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg were reported to be working on the script and…. well, that’s pretty much the last we’ve heard of the project (Feb 2010).

Today, an update courtesy The Hollywood Reporter; seems the core cast members have all struck deals to reprise their roles in what will be titled “American Reunion”.

Seann William Scott (who’s currently in rehab), Jason Biggs and Eugene Levy have all officially signed on. It’s also looking likely that Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge will reprise their roles too (no mention of Alyson Hannigan, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Shannon Elizabeth or January Jones in the report).

Last year Scott, who’d be back as the inquitious ‘Stifler’, talked highly of the script and suggested that the writers had been including the actors in the creative process.

“I’ve been working on it for a year and a half, just developing it,” Scott told Worst Previews. “I don’t know if I will ultimately [return]. But if it’s awesome and it’s really funny… If it’s done for the right reasons to see these guys at 28-30 years old, could be great.

“It would be everybody back,” Scott explained. “The idea would probably be the kind of high-school reunion. It would be centered around that.

And not too long ago Chris Weitz, who with brother Paul directed the first film and who will executive produce the new film, offered MovieWeb the reason why it’s time to return to the crust.

“I know that Universal wants to do it. We want to be involved in it. Because of the affection we hold for the story and the characters. We want to get as many former cast members back as possible,” he told the site. “In some ways, like any reunion, it would be about the nostalgia element. For the time that it came out. For how people felt when they first saw it. And now to experience it again with all the pathos and humor that implies.”

Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct the picture.
