“How to Train Your Dragon” opened huge and finally knocked “Alice” from the number 1 spot, grossing $43.7M. The film has been scoring some fantastic reviews and word of mouth has been great. The $165M film will continue to perform well through this week since its Spring Break and all the kids are home. Next week though the film will lose some of its 3D theaters to the epic-action film “Clash of the Titans”. “Alice in Wonderland” finally fell down the rabbit hole to second place, grossing $17.7M. It will break the $300M mark this week and it looks like it has a chance to still pass the $350M mark.
“Hot Tub Time Machine” opened well but not great, grossing $14M. The studio was hoping for another “The Hangover” hit. MGM was marketing the hell out of the movie via tons of advance screenings and on viral websites. The $36M low cost picture should recoup its budget in theaters and make a whole lot more on DVD. “The Bounty Hunter” has a decent hold in week two grossing $12M, bringing its total to $38.4M. The $40M budgeted flick could finish around $80M for a very successful run. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” fell a little more in week two dropping 54.3%. The middle school book adaption grossed $10.1M, bringing its total to $35.9M. “Diary” could end up grossing around $65M for an excellent run considering it only cost $15M.
“She’s Out of My League” dropped a reasonable 39.5% to gross $3.5M in week three. The romantic comedy’s total stands at $25.6M which is decent since the budget is only $20M. “Green Zone” grossed $3.4M, bringing its total to a very weak $30.5M after three weeks. “Shutter Island” grossed $3.2M in week six, bringing its total to $120.6M. The thriller will bring in a final gross of $130M.
“Repo Men” is disappearing quick grossing only $3.0M, bringing its ten day total to $11.3M. This film should see a more successful run on DVD. “Our Family Wedding” eased 37.1% in week two bringing in $2.4M. “Wedding” final gross will end up a little over $20M which is decent for the low budget film
Next week, “Clash of the Titans”, “The Last Song” and “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married” all released.
