Brown, Jarratt, Isaacs lead Red Dog prequel

The prequel to Aussie smash “Red Dog” has commenced principal photography in the Pilbara and Perth.

A noteworthy cast, including Aussie icon Bryan Brown, John Jarratt, Levi Miller, and import Jason Isaacs, star in “Blue Dog”.

Kriv Stenders is in the directors chair, helming a script by Daniel Taplitz.

Inspired by the historical and cultural characteristics of the region in the 1960s, the new film will follow the early events leading up to the discovery of Red Dog on the road to Dampier.

Miller plays Mick, a young boy growing up on a cattle station in the Pilbara, who befriends the dog.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the film would raise the profile of the Pilbara while also providing economic benefits to the region.

“Having the film’s cast and crew based in the region for the majority of the filming will provide significant benefit to local businesses and suppliers,” Mr Redman said.

“Blue Dog will again put the Pilbara on the international stage, highlighting its spectacular landscape and rich cultural history, which are unique tourism assets of the region.

“Diversification of the Pilbara’s economic base through industries that are not reliant on the resources industry, such as tourism, will deliver more jobs and locally generated wealth.”

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said ”Blue Dog” would boost the State’s screen industry and further position Western Australia as a viable film making destination.

“A highly talented crew, including more than 60 local screen practitioners, are working on the film which is being shot entirely in the State,” Mr Day said.

“Red Dog was a commercial and critical success, winning the AACTA Award for Best Film and screening at the Berlin International Film Festival. This is testament to the creativity and skills of our local screen industry, and puts Blue Dog in good stead.”
