Campbell goes Birds watching?

“Casino Royale” helmer directing Naomi Watts

Martin Campbell did a whiz-bang job directing “Casino Royale” – itself a remake, of sorts, I guess – but does he know it? I don’t reckon he does – I mean, he’s going straight from that into directing a remake of Hitchcock’s “The Birds” for Platinum Dunes? The man needs some self-assurance… the man needs/deserves a better gig than that!

Not only is it a very underwhelming gig (something someone could command with their peepers closed) but something that’ll fit him about as well as Size 78 jeans on a fat man – in other words, not at all.

You don’t follow up a great flick like “Royale” with a Michael Bay horror remake… you just don’t; and don’t the graduates of MTV video-school get first stab at doing those anyway? I’d sure like to hear just how many tacos Campbell was offered to steer the remake of “The Birds” – must be more than a large plate full.

Maybe it’s just because I’m not too excited about a remake of a classic flick like “The Birds” – we saw what happened with that other Hitchcock remake a few years back – but Campbell’s attachment just seems all wrong to me. But then, I never thought Naomi Watts would be attracted to such a film either…. So maybe it has a killer script? Dunno. Or maybe someone just has a slice of the Merrill Lynch fund and wants to make friends?
