Academy Award® winning filmmaker Eva Orner will join President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, Professor Gillian Triggs, crusading lawyer Julian Burnside and more for Q&As following a number of special event screenings of CHASING ASYLUM nationally.
CHASING ASYLUM exposes the real impact of Australia’s offshore detention policies and explores how ‘The Lucky Country’ became a country where leaders choose detention over compassion, and governments deprive the desperate of their basic human rights. The film features never-before-seen footage from inside Australia’s offshore detention camps, revealing the personal impact of sending those in search of a safe home to languish in limbo.
The Australian premiere season begins in Melbourne on 5 May with the sold out Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF) opening night and then travels to Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, Sydney, Alice Springs, Perth and Darwin. Additional Q&A sessions have been added to the tour to meet demand.
The film will have a theatrical season from 26 May at The Classic, Cinema Nova and Sun Theatre Yarraville in Melbourne, New Farm Cinema in Brisbane, Dendy Newtown in Sydney, Dendy Cinema Canberra and Luna Cinema in Perth. The film will also be available to book on demand at your local cinema via TUGG from 2 June.
To coincide with the film’s Australian season, Harper Collins will also release a book, CHASING ASYLUM, in which filmmaker Eva Orner takes us on a personal, gripping and compelling journey to show us how she came to make the documentary and what went into making the film. The book is an insight into a filmmaker’s journey, and a very personal story of the cost, risks and rewards of putting yourself on the line for a film and for a cause.
