I haven’t received a copy of the movie, so I’ve no idea whether it’s any good or not, but if it’s anything like the original – which was a fun, hammy, action-packed B-movie in A-movie clothing – then the new direct-to-disc “Scorpion King” sequel is bound to be worth a look.
I had a chance to chat, albeit briefly, to actor Michael Copon – who inherits the part previously occupied by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – the star of the film. Here’s the result of that natter.
Michael, tell me about the audition process?
Well, I went to audition once but had to come back to show the “rougher” side to me and that I can play a warrior in the film.
And I take it you were a fan of the original movie?
I did like it a lot, yeah. I love any type of epic film – and of course ‘The Rock’ was my favourite wrestler.
How does your film differ from The Rock’s film?
Our film is a little darker as opposed to the earlier one – which was more comical. Russell [Mulcahy, the director] and I agreed it would be best if we went deeper inside the character, and had more depth. But we also kept it light and on the surface from time to time.
Did you have to train for the film?
I trained for two weeks prior to shooting the film and would wake up at 4am just to go work out every morning. I was trying to get as big as possible while maintaining low body fat.
Why do you think direct-to-video sequels/prequels are so popular right now?
Because if people saw the first one and loved it… they kind of know what to already expect for the next… there’s less to promote because they’re already familiar with the basic storyline.
Randy Couture. How was he to work with?
Nice and Quiet. Very calm demeanor off-set. Smart and Polite as well – which is weird considering the first time I saw him I thought he was gonna eat me for dinner!
