Cloverfield Lane helmer salvages old Depp project

Years and years after Tony Curtis’s disappearing act as Houdini, Hollywood’s going to give it another go – this time with “10 Cloverfield Lane” director Daniel Trachtenberg at the helm of the biopic.

Deadline says the project, set up at Lionsgate, is the same one “Galaxy Quest” director Dean Parisot tried to maker with Johnny Depp. Trachtenberg’s doing his own thing here, and using the words from William Kalush and Larry Sloman’s book The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero, to flesh out the storyline. Noah Oppenheim, who you’ll recall won the scripting prize at Venice this year, is onboard to write so it sounds like there’s some good names behind the project. Producing are veteran Frank Marshall (of “Raiders” and “Bourne”) and Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty”).

Harry Houdini’s story has been told dozens of times but I guess he hasn’t been treated to a really, really decent movie. Maybe the time has come?
