Cruise is Top Gun for Singer’s next

The lead in Bryan Singer’s new WWII thriller

It didn’t take Tom Cruise long to win his way back into the ‘worth bothering with again’ leagues. (Admittedly, no one wants to speak bad about the head of a film studio – Cruise recently took the head position at the newly reformed United Artists – do they? It’s a bridge you just don’t wanna burn. You never know when you might need to cross it).

According to Variety, Couch-jumping Mapother will follow-up his plum role in the new Robert Redford/Meryl Streep pic “Lions for Lambs” (which I personally believe will be one of the top films of the year), with the lead role in Bryan Singer’s next flick – coincidentally, set-up at United Artists.

The new Singer film, a WWII thriller, is based on a script by “Usual Suspects” scribe Christopher McQuarrie.

Cruise only just agreed to play a role in the film – which is said to revolve around German generals who hatch a scheme to assassinate Adolph Hitler at the height of WWII – last week; initially only taking on the project in a producing capacity.

“After reading the script, Tom and I knew immediately that this was a film we had to make,” Cruise’s producing partner, Paula Wagner tells the trade. “As an added bonus, because of Bryan Singer’s involvement and Tom’s admiration for him as a filmmaker as well as the excellence of the script, the project attracted Tom as an actor. I cannot think of a more perfect combination of creative elements for our second production.”
