President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” director/writer/producer J.J. Abrams showcased the riveting conclusion to the Skywalker saga today at D23.
Kennedy and Abrams revved up the audience, introducing nine stars from the film—many of whom marked this as their first D23 Expo appearance: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran and Billy Dee Williams, plus special appearances from R2-D2, BB-8 and the new droid D-O.
Abrams said the film is a tribute to the late Carrie Fisher, who passed away shortly before production commenced on “Rise”.
“The character of Leia is the heart of this story,” he said. “We realized we could not possibly tell the end of these nine films without Leia.”
Anthony Daniels, back as C-3PO, guarantees audiences a solid time with the conclusion.
“It’s hard for me to understand that the story is ending,” he said. “But what an ending. I cannot wait to share what we’ve done.”
The footage screened begins “with Luke Skywalker saying, “A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.””, says The L.A Times. “Rey is on a desert planet with a bustling city, almost prequel like in color. Poe and Finn and others are with her — they look down and it’s bright and crowded with people, creatures, flags. Cut to Rey throwing a lightsaber at a tree, coming back to her as a boomerang. We see Kylo Ren on a barge-like ship. Luke fades as we move to a voiceover of the Emperor saying the journey nears its end, and then Rey, in Sith robes, unveils a Darth Maul-like double sworded red saber, extending each side separately with dramatic flair . She stares straight ahead — the object of her gaze, and her ultimate allegiance, a mystery.”
Here’s the beautiful new poster for “Rise of the Skywalker” – featuring a certain iniquitous Senator peering in from top center…
And here’s Rey’s bad-ass new look – – – as we suggested on our Instagram earlier, is there a twist coming concerning Rey’s arc in the threequel?
