Eddie Murphy is The Cook

Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy has replaced Samuel L.Jackson in the Bruce Beresford-directed drama “The Cook”.

In a welcome change of pace for Murphy, the comedic actor is playing a chef hired by a dying man to make up some meals for his wife and daughter after he passes.

Susan McMartin (“Californication”) wrote the script for the Mark Canton (“300”) produced picture.

Canton tells Empire :

It’s a great screenplay. It’s a small story – a true story – of a family and a guy who comes into their lives. You have to come up with either really great big franchise driven movies or little character driven movies. Those are the two businesses to be in. I’m in both. You don’t like to be caught in the middle.

The producer suggests Murphy is keen to follow in the footsteps of comeback kid Matthew McConaughey.

Everyone now wants to do what Matt McConaughey did, so we’re financing these movies when we think they’re put together the right way. This will be Eddie Murphy like you’ve never seen him. Of that I can assure you.

“The Cook” begins filming next month, after which Murphy’s set to reprise Axel Foley for a fourth “Beverly Hills Cop”.
